Bully-Free Workplace

Workplace bullying is the repeated, health-harming mistreatment of an employee by one or more employees through acts of commission or omission manifested as: verbal abuse; behaviors-physical or nonverbal-that are threatening, intimidating, or humiliating, work sabotage, interference with production; exploitation or a vulnerability-physical, social, or psychological; or some combination of one or more categories (The Workplace Bullying Institute, 2011, P. 13)

Unfortunately work settings can be impacted by disrespectful communication that not only impacts those involved, but has a ripple effect on witnesses and anyone aware of problematic professional behavior. We work confidentially with any size organization to effectively address vulnerabilities in organizational communication and behavior.

Workplace bullying has a profound effect on both individuals and organizations. When left unattended, workplace bullying can result in: high turnover rates; litigation risk; absenteeism; and reduced productivity (Namie & Namie, 2011). Our work with organizations relating to this challenge includes:

  • Defining and assessing specific problems and vulnerabilities
  • Training and integrating anti-bullying information into new worker orientation and on-going staff development that ties into workplace values
  • Collaborating with organizational leadership in development and implementation of policies and protocols
  • Facilitating confidential quantitative and qualitative surveys about bullying in order to best assess prevalence, needs for prevention, and intervention
  • Documenting survey findings and making recommendations based on current professional literature addressing the problem
  • Introducing simple user-friendly ways of understanding and addressing the impact of bullying
  • Ongoing consultation and follow-up as indicated

Effective action involves:

Assessing organizational culture, communication, and messaging

Creating and enforcing a zero-tolerance policy that identifies clear reporting channels

Providing agency-wide trauma-informed training to prevent bullying and stop it from reoccurring if it has already happened

Documenting disrespectful behavior

Coaching supervisors to model safe and inclusive interactions all employee needs to thrive
